Manufacturing, early-mid 20th Century
This group of pages is about aspects of pottery manufacture before clay was replaced by plastics in Britain around the 1950s. It deserves a place on this website because it too is concerned with what life was like for ordinary people - in this case those involved in manufacturing in the early to mid 20th century. The chosen industry is the manufacturing of pottery and the people concerned were potters and their families. Why this out of all the possible manufacturing industries? The reason is that my mother, whose written notes and conversations stimulated the start of this website, grew up in a pottery family - the Cole Pottery in Tottenham. After her death, I was inspired to document her recollections and find out more. But I am getting ahead of myself....
