Shelves in an early 1900s UK sweet shop lined with jars of loose sweets, weighed out separately for each customer - a reconstruction in Milestones Museum, Basingstoke.
Probably some of the original labels were damaged, which explains the neat computer printouts on some jars.
The jars include pontefract cakes (liquorice), acid drops, winter mixture, mint humbugs, toffee humbugs, blackcurrant humbugs, fruit drops, pear drops, aniseed balls, liquorice comfits, fruit rock, fruit pastilles, dolly mixture and jelly babies.
This website Join me in the 1900s is
a contribution to the social history of everyday life in 20th century Britain
from the early 1900s to about 1960, seen through personal recollections and
illustrations, with the emphasis on what it was like to live in those times.
