An adult gas mask (respirator), World War Two

An adult gas mask, photographed in the Imperial War Museum.

Because there never was a gas attack in Britain in World War Two, I never saw an adult wearing a gas mask. What I know comes from what I have been told by older people, museums and shows. It is best described in the following pictures.

A World War Two civilian gas mask

Cigarette card pictures showing adult gas masks.

There is a photo of wardens wearing their iconic canvass shoulder bags containing their gas masks.

If you can add anything to this page or provide a photo, I would be pleased to hear from you.
